ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS KILFINANE EMMETS -126 YEARS AGO THIS WEDNESDAY:
On Sunday November 20th. 1898 in Tipperary Town saw Kilfinane Emmets win Limerick’s first All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship title when they defeated Tulloroan (Kilkenny) by 3.04 to 2.04 in the 1897 decider. Bonfires blazed on the Moat signalling to the countryside around Ballyhoura and deep into County Cork that Limerick represented by Kilfinane Emmets had won their first All Ireland Hurling title, played on Sunday 20th. November 1898, 126 years ago

Belville Gaels 2-09 Blackrock 0-08 played in in Mick Neville Park

UNDER 14 HURLERS LOSE OUT IN COUNTY FINAL :
On Saturday last October 12th. Blackrock Under 14 Hurlers played Belville Gaels in the Mr. Binman County Under 14 Hurling Division 3 Championship Final in Mick Neville Park. Blackrock were the early pacesetters winning plenty possession and had two shots at goal cleared, their opening score from a well taken free from outfield from Adam Kelly, points from a free and play gave Belville Gaels the lead. Jack Roche with a Blackrock point from play had the sides level. A Bellville Gaels goal gave them the lead that they would not relinquish, a pointed free from Jack Roche reduced the deficit to the minimum with a pointed free and from play, both sides exchanged points, the Blackrock one from a Jack Roche free. Belville Gaels scored their second goal just before the interval to lead at the break by 2-03 to 0-05.The second half saw Belville Gaels on top adding six points, while Blackrock replied with three pointed frees from Jack Roche, with victory going to Belville Gaels by victory 2-09 to 0-08. Team Management: Anton Roche, Ben Murphy and Roger Gleeson along with the players deserve great credit for their displays throughout the year to win their group undefeated in their seven outings and a Semi Final win to qualify for the County Final, where they met a much stronger Belville Gaels side (a combination of Feohanagh/Castlemahon and Feenagh/ Kilmeedy) and gave of their best. Thanks also to the supporters who turned out to support the team in the Championship campaign throughout the year

Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 7
Blackrock 3.09 Newcastle West 0.17 played in Ballyagran.

Under 20 Hurlers defeated
Blackrock Under 20 Hurlers made the short journey on Wednesday evening October 2nd. to play neighbours Glenroe in County Under 20 A Hurling Championship Group 2 Round 3 game, which saw the home side emerge winners on a score-line of 5-14 to 2-12. The opening half was evenly contested with Glenroe leading at the interval by 0-08 to 0-06.
The second half commenced with sides exchanging a point each from play, on the thirty fourth minute of Glenroe scored two quick goals to take an eight point lead, Blackrock replied with three points, two from play before the home side scored their fourth goal to lead by nine points 3.10 to 0.10. Glenroe added 2.04 to Blackrock’s 2.02 in the last quarter to score a well-earned win.

Intermediate Hurlers finish the Championship with a Win.
In Round 7 of the Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship game played in Ballyagran on Saturday afternoon Newcastle West provided the opposition in what was the last outing for Blackrock who were out of championship contention coming into the game.
The game played in very difficult conditions with heavy rain, playing against the rain and wind, Newcastle West were the early pacesetters and ran up a 0.09 lead after 25 minutes of play, both sides also missed a number of scoring chances in the first half, before David Moloney opened the Blackrock account with a well taken goal after 27 minutes of play, a Colm O’Keeffe pointed free saw Blackrock reduce the defict to 5 points as the half time whistle sounded. Newcastle West 0.09 Blackrock 1.01
On the restart Blackrock had an early goal from substitute Barry O’Shaughnessy, after David Moloney provided the pass. Newcastle West replied with point, while Blackrock hit back with 3 points from Colm O’Keeffe (2) frees and Ruairi O’Shaughnessy to have the sides level after 15 minutes of second half play. Both sides exchanged points, the Blackrock score coming from a Colm O’Keeffe free, before Newcastle West replied with 4 answered points, (1 free), it seemed at this stage that Newcastle West were in the driving seat but Blackrock with points from Jimmy Quilty free and play and Richie McCarthy reduced the deficit to1 point, both sides exchanged points from play with time running out, a Blackrock free from Jimmy Quilty ended in the Newcastle West net after a deflection to put Blackrock ahead for the first time, the drama was to continue in injury time as Newcastle West were awarded a free which was pointed, the final whistle sounded as the puck out was taken, giving Blackrock a well earned win 3-09 to 0-17 to bring the curtain down on a very busy playing year, Well Done to all involved, Players Management and loyal Supporters.

CLUB HURLING NEWS:
The Under 20 County Hurling Championship game Glenroe v Blackrock fixed for Friday evening last September 27th. was deferred and is refixed for this Wednesday October 2nd in Glenroe at 6pm.
On this Saturday October 5th. in Ballyagran at 2pm. Blackrock will play Newcastle West in the final round of the Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Undefeated Newcastle West are already qualified for a Semi Final place, while Blackrock with just two wins from six outings will be hoping for a good performance to finish off the playing year.

This result ends our participation in the Limerick Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship and we will compete at the Junior ‘B’ grade in 2025. Thanks to all our players and management for their efforts this year.

There was a lovely end to the season for our Bord na nOg Under 6’s, Under 8’s and Under 10’s in the clubhouse on Sunday morning last.. Medals were presented to all our superstars followed by treats and hot chocolate. Pat McNamara extended his thanks on behalf of Bord na nÓg to all the coaches who have volunteered their time over the season and encouraged more parents to get involved

Blackrock Bord na nOg Presentations: The Blackrock Under 14 and Under 16 hurling teams were presented with new training tops on Friday evening last kindly sponsored by Sheehy’s Centra Kilfinane and Cronin Construction Kilfinane Thank you.

CLUB HURLING NEWS:
On Saturday last September 21st, the club had another busy day with three County Hurling Championship games at three different venues
Under 16 Hurlers loose out at Semi Final stage.

The Under 16 Hurlers had a very early start to the day with a 10.30am throw in Mick Neville Park , they played Croagh/Kilfinny/Rathkeale in the Mr. Binman County Under 16 Hurling Division 3 Championship Semi Final where they lost out on a 2.16 to 2.13 score-line to exit the championship in which they recorded some fine displays to reach the Semi Final, winning their group undefeated. The opening half was evenly contested, with only two points separating the sides 0.12 to 1.07 in favour of Croagh/Kilfinny/Rathkeale. Two quick goals earle in the second half put the winners in the driving seat with a lead of 2.14 to 1.08, but Blackrock fought back to score 1.05 without reply and reduce the deficit to one point, a shot for a Blackrock score hit the crossbar and rebounded back into play and cleared, a late pointed free and one from play sealed the win and a place in the final for the Croagh/Kilfinny/Rathkeale combination.

Intermediate side out of Championship contention following loss to Granagh/Ballingarry

In Round 6 of the Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship game played in Kilmallock on Saturday afternoon Granagh/Ballingarry provided the opposition in what was essentially a must-win game for both sides, both sides coming into the game with two wins from five outings. Blackrock were the early pace setters and were 2.04 to 0.01 after ten minutes of play, Richie McCarthy and Callan Ensor the goal scores. As the game progressed Granagh/Ballingarry came more into the game out scoring Blackrock 0.07 to 0.01 in the second quarter to leave the score at the interval Blackrock 2.05 Granagh/Ballingarry 0.08.
On the resumption of play, Granagh/Ballingarry reduced the deficit to two points before they scored their first goal after 39 minutes of play, two quick fire goals within a minute saw Blackrock trailing by eight points,after 53 minutes of play, however they rallied, a penalty goal from Paudie Leahy followed by their fourth goal from a scramble in the square with the clock in stoppage time, Granagh/Ballingarry had the final point of the game from a free to secure the victory on a score-line of 3.17 to 4.11. The result ends Blackrock’s hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages, they meet high flying Newcastlewest in the final round outing in Ballyagran on Saturday week October 5th.

On Saturday evening. in the Woodlands House Hotel County Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship Round r game, Feenagh was the venue for the meeting of Blackrock and Rathkeale, who proved best to win by 2.19 to 0.05 to condemn Blackrock to a relegation final, which is fixed for this Sunday September 29th in Kilbreedy at 4pm with Bruff providing the opposition.
