December 19th

There was no winner of the lotto held on 11th December with the most unusual set of numbers 10, 11, 12, 13.

On Wednesday 18th the last lotto of 2019 will take place in McCarthy’s Bar, for a jackpot of €9650.  We also will have €10 extra lucky dips for our annual Christmas thank you to our patrons.

It has been a wonderful year for Blackrock GAA, winning the Premier Intermediate Championship, fielding teams at U21 and Minor hurling for the first time in several years as Blackrock.

We also saw fine performances from our Jnr B hurlers. and we now look forward to Senior status for 2020 and the challenge of senior hurling.  Best wishes to Jimmy Quilty and his management team. We will start the playing year when our u21 hurlers will play championship in the February March months.  Until then our hardworking players and management will be training and preparing for the playing year ahead, and we wish them all well.

Before the hard work starts we have Christmas to enjoy and a long puck to play.  The long puck is on 1st January at 12md, €40 for a team of 4 and €20 for a juvenile team of 4, from Muirin’s Cross to Ardpatrick.

The victory dinner dance is on Friday 3rd January in the Woodlands, with dinner at 7pm, music with Footloose, followed by Neil Hennessy DJ. Tickets €35 are available from Brendan O’Brien, Fintan Leahy, John Walsh and Carmel Murphy.

As we look forward to next year we have an offer for adult membership and a years lotto for €120, the yearly adult membership is €40 for 2020, student and OAP is €20 for the year.

Richie McCarthy retired from intercounty hurling at the end of the 2019 season and we wish him well in his retirement.  Thanks for the fabulous memories.

Congratulations to Hugh Murphy who has been elected PRO of the South and County board for 2020. Best wishes to the South and County bord committees for 2020. 

As we look forward hopefully for Limerick success in 2020 we wish John Kiely and the managements and players in all Limerick hurling and football teams the very best of luck, especially Jimmy Quilty Jnr and all our players who will hopefully feature.

Congratulations to Oisin O’Callaghan who competes at a high level of downhill racing who has secured a two year pro contract with YT Mob.  Best wishes to all locals in their sporting endeavours in 2020.

We take a two week break from the lotto after the 18th December and the lotto will resume on Thursday 9th January in Healy’s bar.

The Blackrock GAA AGM took place on Monday 9th December.  A large crowd attended and comprehensive reports outlined our successful year, fielding teams at minor, U21, Junior B and Premier Intermediate hurling, the highlight of the year winning the Premier Intermediate and contesting the Munster Championship.  Outgoing officer Hugh Murphy was thanked for his work during the year.

The officers for 2020 are, Chairperson Fintan Leahy, Vice Chairperson Seoirse Bulfin, Secretary Carmel Murphy, Assistant Secretary Tom Gleeson. Treasurer John Walsh, Assistant Treasurer Peter O’Sullivan and Brendan O’Brien, PRO Carmel Murphy, Registrar Dave Moloney, Irish Officer Cliodhna Moloney, Children’s Officer Joan O’Dea.

All other officers and committees, especially a finance committee will be organised at the first meeting in January, a fundraiser for development is top of the agenda for the new year. 

Membership for 2020 is €40 for an adult membership, €20 for students and OAP’s.  There will be an offer of membership and a year’s lotto ticket for €120.  Please contact an Officer of the club to avail of this offer. The first lotto of 2020 will be on the 8th January.

The Victory Social is on the 3rd January in the Woodlands at 7pm, presentation of County Premier Intermediate Medals. Music by Footloose.  Tickets available from club officers.  Or contact the club phone re same.

Blackrock GAA club AGM takes place in Ardpatrick Community Centre on Mon 9th December at 7.30.  All welcome.

There was no winner of the Blackrock GAA lotto on Thursday the 25th November.  The numbers drawn were 9, 16, 17, 22. Congratulations to Eamon O’Keeffe, Muirins Cross who won second prize in the Club Limerick Draw this week, well done to Blackrock Bord na nOg the local promotors.

In 2019 we have won the Premier Intermediate hurling championship and ably contested the Munster Championship hosting our match V Fr O’Neills, showcasing our fine facilities and Club, a year when we also fielded teams in Minor, U21, Junior B and contested well.  In November of 2019 Richie McCarthy announced his retirement from Limerick Senior hurling, having won a National league medal and a Munster Championship medal with Limerick, Jimmy Quilty Jnr won a Munster Championship medal with Limerick, Killian Aherne won an Ireland tournament medal with Limerick u15 footballers, and many of our under age players played county representing us well.  Hugh Murphy had a busy year as PRO of the County Board. Fintan Leahy is your club Chairman who steered the club through a busy year, with John Walsh Treasurer, Hugh Murphy Secretary and Seoirse Bulfin as Vice Chairman.

We are having our victory dinnerdance on January 3rd in the Woodlands hotel, music by Footloose, followed by Neil Hennessy DJ. Tickets are €35. All welcome to celebrate with us as we look forward to 2020.

Richie McCarthy has announced his retirement from intercounty hurling with the Limerick Senior team.

We are very proud of all Richie has achieved with Limerick and Blackrock and we wish him well in his retirement. He will be a valuable member of our Senior team going forward into 2020 so he wont get much chance to put the feet up. Well done Richie.

Congratulations to Jimmy Quilty who received his munster U18 county hurling medal recently. Well done Jimmy.

The Club AGM will be held on the 9th December at 7.30 in the Parish hall in Ardpatrick.  All welcome, members can download the nomination papers and motion forms from the Blackrock GAA facebook page or from the club website at www.blackrockgaa.com. Closing date for nomination forms is 6pm on Monday 2nd December.

The victory dinner dance will be held on 3rd January in the Woodlands Hotel. Tickets are €35 for dinner with dancing to Footloose afterwards, followed by disco with Neil Hennessy.


November 21st

There was no winner of the lotto on Wed 13th November, the numbers drawn were 3, 8, 22, 25.  The €40 went to Tony O’Sullivan, Tramore, Waterford, Promotor Healys. The Division 3 league final between Blackrock and Pallasgreen was deferred due to bad weather last week, it is now fixed for Thursday 21st but the facebook page will have more details. 

Congratulations to the U12 footballers who received their county medals on Saturday last. The medals were presented to the very excited players by Killian Aherne who won an u16 medal with Limerick footballers this year, followed by food and a reception in the Greenwood Inn. Congratulations to all involved, these players also contested the hurling county final. Bright future ahead for Blackrock.

On Friday next the Limerick Senior hurlers will get their Munster and league medals. Best wishes to Richie McCarthy who was also part of the Limerick Senior super 11 team who lost the Fenway cup final to Kilkenny on Saturday 16th.

We are coming to the end of a very successful year, we had a successful run in Minor and U21 hurling, also in Jnr B and we won the Premier Intermediate hurling Championship and we now play Senior next year. 

To celebrate our fabulous year in Blackrock GAA we have organised a victory Dinner Dance which will take place on 3rd January in the Woodlands hotel, with presentation of medals and dinner and dancing to Footloose. The tickets will be €35. Come and join us as we start the new year in style.

November 7th

The Blackrock Premier Intermediate team completed their Championship today with a two point defeat after extra time to Fr O’Neills of Cork in the Munster Intermediate club competition.  After a fantastic team display we lost on a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-19. Today has been a very emotional day for everyone in the club, a guard of honour from our youngsters announced the arrival of the teams, and our fabulous team were given a standing ovation FullTimeMunsterPIHwhen leaving the field at the end by very proud supporters and family of the very hardworking panel and management. The Club had a big match to host today and huge compliments go to Chairman Fintan Leahy who organised the preparations for the field and facilities today and to everyone in the adult club and Bord na nÓg who worked hard to have the place looking so well. Compliments to Hugh Murphy for the programme, and Seoirse Bulfin for doing MC for the day. We were kindly given the use of the playschool facilities today for our Referee and Munster Council officials, many thanks to the Playschool for their excellent facilities. Donie O’Sullivan provided the sound equipment and Cliodhna Moloney and Ciara Flanagan sang the National Anthem. To all the Club members and Committee who worked hard all week to have the Michael Fox Memorial Park in fine order and everyone who stewarded, made sandwiches etc a huge thanks.

MunsterPIHCThrowInThe team and management had dinner in the The Old Chapel Rooms and afterwards player of the match awards were given for the Mungret match and the two matches against Kildimo Palliskenry. The man of the match award for the Mungret match was Dylan Dawson, for the drawn County final the award went to Paudie Leahy and the replay went to David Moloney. Beautiful food was served by Molly’s Restaurant and Fintan Leahy and Jimmy Quilty addressed the players, and spoke of pride in the effort and suggested celebrating the county final win. Thanks to Molly’s and to everyone who helped with the extensive catering during the day a huge thanks.

“It’s a great day for the Parish” – a comment that was said over and over this week as the Parishes of Kilfinane and Ardpatrick get used to the idea of Senior Hurling next year. We became Premier Intermediate champions for 2019 on Sunday accepting the Michael Fox Memorial cup when we beat Kildimo Pallaskenry on a score line of 1 18 to 0 16. We were 08 to 0 10 at half time playing against a strong wind and after reducing the gap to one a Colm O’Keeffe goal in the 48 minute put us into a lead that we were not going to lose, scoring 5 points in a row to finish strongly.

Paudie Leahy was near flawless as the free taker scoring a total of 8 points, Kevin Palmer scored 3 points, Ruairi O’Shaughnessy and Dave Moloney scored 2 each and Dylan Dawson, Gavin PICC2019BRO’Loughlin and Adrian Cooke scored a point each. It was a super second half from the whole team and we were worthy winners at the end of 5 long additional minutes at the end. Well done to the team captained by Paudie Leahy with Kevin Palmer the vice Captain. We look forward to seeing a huge Blackrock crowd at the match and we would like to pay tribute to the fantastic support we had in the Gaelic Grounds last Sunday. We are also hugely appreciative of the well wishes and congratulations we have received from around the county and beyond. It would be fantastic if we could have the parishes covered in green and white for our visitors next Sunday. Any flags and bunting that can be put up would be great. And plenty of Limerick flags too. Come on the Rockies. Best wishes to Chairman Fintan Leahy and the Club Officers and Committee in hosting the match next Sunday.
In the last week the ladies also brought home a cup winning the Junior B camogie championship as Blackrock Effin. Well done to Captain Mairead Sheedy and all the team and management. Fantastic result and we hope to see both cups doing the tour of the schools in the near future.

October 10th

The Premier Intermediate county final V Kildimo Palliskenry ended in a draw 18 points each. Captain Paudie Leahy scored 11 points, Ruairi O’Shaughnessy and Daithi Heffernan scored 2 each and Dave Moloney, Kevin Palmer, and Adrian Cooke scored a point each. We were ahead all through the match with Kildimo finally drawing level in the 3rd minute of injury time. We went down to 14 men in the 48 minute and fought hard to hold on for a draw. The replay will be Saturday the 26th October in the Gaelic Grounds at 6pm.  Well done to the team and management on a fine performance, huge credit is due to the 33 man panel and backroom team for the hard work put into to achieve this display.

Our under 8’s, 10’s and 12’s played Kildimo Palliskenry at half time of the county final in the Gaelic Grounds.  Proud to say we won all the matches and what a great venue for our small boys and girls to be playing in.  well done to Bord Na nOg for the fine turnout.

A huge thanks to all our fantastic supporters at the final on Sunday and throughout the year.  The noise and colour was amazing, adding to the atmosphere at the match. Thanks to Niamh O’Shaughnessy for the suggestion to pick a section for our Supporters to sit and create this atmosphere, colour and noise.  So again the next day we are saying section 107 or thereabouts (may change on the day if the section is full, will keep ye updated on facebook).  Bring the colour and the noise.

The Premier Intermediate team put in a fine performance to beat Bruree in Round seven of the championship to leave us with 8 points on the table and qualifying for the semi-finals in third place, we won on a scoreline of 3 18 to 0 12.  Goals by Gavin O’Loughlin in each half and a goal by Dylan Dawson kept us ahead for the whole match. Also losses last weekend for the U 16 hurlers V Kilmallock inn the county final, the minor camogie team lost to Kilmallock/Bruff and the U14 camogie team lost to Granagh Ballingarry. 

The under 12 boys won their hurling county league semi final v Ahane and are now in the county league finals of hurling and football.

A very successful golf classic was held over Friday and Saturday with over 30 teams taking part.  The 2019 classic was won by Limerick Senior Hurlers Richie McCarthy, Barry Nash and Barry Murphy.  Second were Ed Fitzgeralg, James Kearney, David Walsh, third were Barry O’Shaughnessy, Mark Heffernan, Jonathan Loftus.  Forth were Ber O’Shaughnessy, Pat O’ Shaughnessy, Pat Sheehy, fifth were Denis Ryan, Sheamie  Morrissey, James Hayes.  The longest drive was won by James O’Doherty and David Deady was second.  Closest the pin on day one was Willie Griffin and on day two was Pat McGrath.  Well done to all who participated.

First prize in the raffle –a Samsung tablet was won by Theresa Carroll, second prize of a Spa day for two people went to Kallib Dawson, and third prize of a Sheehys Centra hamper went to Dave Healy.

The Premier Intermediates return to competition this week after the excitement of the Limerick Senior hurlers.  We play Bruff on Thursday 9th August in Kilbready at 7pm, and on Friday 17th we play Cappamore in Kilteely at 6pm.

The Junior B’s play Knockainy the weekend of 11th August, with the quarter finals the weekend of the 18th August.


August 1st

The fairytale that has been Limerick Senior hurlers and the joy and pleasure they have given to all hurling supporters for the last 18months has come to an end for now.  Following defeat to Kilkenny in the All Ireland semi final in Croke Park on Sunday, we now regroup and savour the elation of the All Ireland win on August 19th 2018.  Huge thanks to John Kiely and his selectors and the team and panel over the championships of 2018 and 2019, with our locals Richie McCarthy and Jimmy Quilty Snr playing vital roles in the All Ireland win.  All in Limerick are devastated, no more so than the team and management who put in such work and dedication.  They end competition for the year as Munster champions and Division 1 league champions and were All Ireland and Fenway champions in 2018.  Best wishes for 2020. 

Hard luck also to the Minor hurlers and management who also suffered defeat in the All Ireland semi final on Sunday ending a fine run, well done to Jimmy Quilty Jnr who played a fine match scoring 2 lovely points from the half back position.  The Minor hurlers are also Munster champions and we hope they will celebrate and enjoy this trophy, doesn’t come along every day and should be savoured.

We also congratulate the Limerick County Board including Hugh Murphy Limerick PRO and Scoil Pol’s Sean O’Donnell and his team of statisticians on the fine performance of the Limerick teams and local bus company Griffins Coaches for transporting our fine teams.

Limerick teams who did well this weekend included the Limerick u15 football team team including Killian Aherne who beat Roscommon in the Dermot Early Cup semi-final , the camogie U15 team who won the Division 2 All Ireland blitz , including locals Maggie English and Ciara O’Riordan.  Best wishes to the Senior camogie team including Katie Hennessey in the championship quarter final on Saturday 3rd August in Thurles at 17.30.  Losses however for the Ladies footballers V Sligo.

Well done to the Premier Intermediate team who won the South championship semi final v Dromin Athlacca on a scoreline of 1 16  to 0 17 on Thursday last.  On Friday the Junior B hurlers also played Dromin Athlacca in the South Championship and won on a scoreline of 2 20 to 1 11.

There were mixed fortunes for the Limerick ladies this week with the Senior Camogie and ladies football teams losing but the underage camogie teams fared better with a win and a draw.

The senior Camogie team will play Tipperary in the quarter final on August 3rd.

All roads lead to Croke Park where Limerick Senior and Minor teams play Kilkenny in the All Ireland Semifinals.  Richie McCarthy has returned to full fitness.  We wish Richie McCarthy and Jimmy Quilty the very best of luck in the Senior and Minor matches.  Safe journey to all the teams and to all supporters making their way to Croke Park.

Well done to the Blackrock/Effin u13 camogie team who beat Adare on Mon last and now play the Plate final on Wednesday 24th.  Well done to the ladies who beat Knockaderry in the 9 a side competition 17 points to 11

Limerick teams had mixed fortunes over the weekend, the ladies footballers lost as did the u20 footballers on Wednesday last. On Sunday the Senior Camogie team also lost to Galway on a scoreline of 2 12 to 1 10.  Hard luck to Katie Hennessy and the team.  The Limerick Junior camogie team drew with Waterford. 1 15 to 2 12.

On Saturday 27th July the Limerick Senior hurlers play Kilkenny and the Minor hurlers will know their opponents next weekend after the quarter finals.

July 4th

Some weekends are better than others, and this weekend was one of those with Munster final wins for the Limerick Senior and Minor hurlers with a fine performance from Jimmy Quilty in the Minors and Richie McCarthy recovering from injury with the Seniors.  Both teams now play the All Ireland Semi finals on the weekend of 27th, 28th July.  The Limerick Senior Camogie team also won this weekend, with Katie Hennessy coming on as a sub.  Busy times ahead for Hugh Murphy PRO of the Limerick County Bord and Liz Hennessy Chairperson Limerick Camogie Bord. Ardpatrick native Jessica Heffernan played in the Primary Game in the Hurling Munster final and Blackrock Effin u12’s played at half time in the Camogie match.  Well done to all.

Limerick U 20 hurlers play on Wed 3rd July against Cork in Cork, best wishes to Daithi Heffernan who is on the u20 panel.

Blackrock Junior B hurlers had a fine win in the South Championship over Glenroe on Saturday 29th, on a scoreline 0 16 to 1 09.  We have a bye in the next round and we are due to play Dromin-Athlacca on the weekend of 28th July, with the match V Knockainy fixed for weekend of 11th Aug.

The minor championship due to start this week was postponed due to Jimmy Quilty’s involvement with the County team, see papers or facebook for updated fixtures.

Scoil Pol under 16 ½ footballers won the LIT junior shield under the captaincy of Declan Gilligan beating Desmond Collage by 3 points.  The first and second year girls football team retained the Castletroy collage Munster cup title beating St Annes of Tipperary in the final to win by 1 point. The u14 boys contested feile last Saturday, beating Glenroe and losing a hard fought battle against Coislea Geals. A very strong Killaculla Gaels won all their matches. Well done to all for fine performances.

Richie McCarthy has gone on tour with the Liam McCarthy cup and has attended functions in New York and San Francisco.  Well done Richie and Ruth and lovely to see photos of the locals in America with the cup.  The wonderful year that has had Limerick people everywhere celebrating continues.

The remainder of the Limerick Senior Hurlers and Management and County bord officials and everyone involved with the team were invited to the Aras last Tue where the President Of Ireland, President Higgins and his wife welcomed the Limerick contingent. Locals who enjoyed the trip were Hugh Murphy county PRO and his daughter Joan and Kevin and Aine Griffin, Griffin Coaches, Kevin has been delighted to transport the Limerick team for many years now.  A lovely day out was had by all.

A very enjoyable night was held in the Greenwood Inn on Friday last to honour the County Junior Hurling Champions of 1982 and the U21 county hurling champions of 1988. The majority of the players attended and were presented with a lovely trophy by the club Chairmen of those years, John McCarthy in 1982 who was also a player on the day and Ber Shaughnessy in 1988.  Players came from near and far to catch up with their former team mates. A lot of hurling stories were told on the night, and the matches were watched on the TV, everyone studying the match and the spectators to see a glimpse of themselves and their friends and family back in the day.

Fintan Leahy current club chairman welcomed everyone to the event and Seoirse Bulfin as always did a super job as MC.  Thanks to the Gilligan family for the lovely venue and to the Tea Cosy who provided the food on the night.  We are looking forward to marking the County Junior B league winners of 1992 and the Intermediate hurling champions of 1993 in the near future.

Club membership is due currently and will close shortly. €30 for adult membership.

Hugh Murphy, county PRO attended Congress at the weekend and we look forward to an account of the changes for the future at the next club meeting.

The U21 South Semi final was postponed last weekend due to unplayable pitch and is fixed for Friday 1st March, in Knocklong at 7.30 V Coslea Gaels,  weather permitting. See papers and facebook for up to date fixtures.

Mixed fortunes for the Limerick teams this weekend, congratulations to the Limerick Senior ladies footballers on a great win V Fermanagh, but onwards and upwards for the rest of the Limerick adult teams.  Best wishes to the Limerick Senior Camogie team who play Galway in the upcoming semi-final of the league, and to the Limerick Senior hurlers V Clare next weekend.


February 21st

On Friday 22nd February all roads lead to The Greenwood Inn, Ardpatrick to remember and celebrate the 1982 Junior County hurling champions and the 1988 U21 hurling county Champions.  We hope it will be a night of chat and reflection of the finals and the leadup to them.  Everyone is welcome to help with the celebrations.

Congratulations to all the Limerick teams doing well in the leagues at the moment, especially the Limerick Senior hurling team who continue to allow us to celebrate and relish the title of All Ireland Champions as we beat Kilkenny by 9 points on Sunday 17th February.

On a trip to Croke Park on Saturday I found the original Liam McCarthy cup in the museum, first played for in 1923 and won by Limerick.  Lovely place to visit and well worth the trip up.  Photos of the trip on the Facebook page.  The miniature Liam McCarthy Cup was €6 in Croke Park.


February 14th

After an absence of several years Blackrock GAA U21 hurlers took to the field on Sunday 10th  V Killaculla Gaels in the South Championship and emerged victorious in very wintery conditions on a score line of 1 14 to 2 10. 

After an entertaining first half Blackrock were 0 9 to 0 8 behind at half time.  We started the second half brightly and got on top very quickly.  With 15 minutes to go, Blackrock led by 2 points.  A long high ball into the square was pulled on spectacularly by Callan Ensor, for the first goal of the match. 

Two further points looked to have secured the win but two late goals for Killaculla Gaels made for a tight finish but Blackrock held on for the win.  Blackrock now advance to the U21 A semi-final.

January 31st

A great night was held on Fri 25th January in the community centre, Ardpatrick to celebrate the All Ireland win with our local hero’s Richie McCarthy and Jimmy Quilty.  A presentation was made to them by the Club Presidents Donie O’Sullivan and Dave Sheehy. Presentations were also made to Jimmy Quilty Junior who was with the back room team and Hugh Murphy the County PRO, by President Con Danaher and Club Chairman, Fintan Leahy. 

A huge crowd were present for the occasion and the Guest of Honour was the fabulous Liam McCarthy cup. Hundreds of photos were taken by the very dedicated Pat Moloney who has everyone in the parishes photographed with Liam at this stage.  Many thanks to Pat and contact him for your photos.  Thanks to Tom Murphy for his photos and videos of the night.  Also thanks to the photographer from the Limerick Leader and to John Mortell from the Vale Star. 

Refreshments on the night were supplied by the Tea Cosy, Ardpatrick, thanks to Michelle and Elaine and to Teresa Gilligan for the shop. 

The Harty cup semi-final between Thurles CBS and Christian Brothers Cork was held in the Michael Fox Memorial Park on Saturday 26th January with the Cork school emerging victorious 2 12 to 0 13, many thanks to all our stewards on the day.

The club lotto jackpot on Wednesday 23rd January was not won, the numbers drawn were 2 5 23 24.

On Sunday the 16th December history was made in Limerick when the Limerick Senior hurling team were presented with their All Ireland medals. Our own Richie McCarthy is now a proud owner of a Celtic Cross medal and we are delighted to congratulate Richie on this fabulous achievement. Proud night for Henry and Ann and all the family.

Presentations were also made to Jimmy Quilty Senior as a selector of the Limerick Senior hurlers, to Sean O'Donnell in Scoil Pol, statistician, to Jimmy Quilty junior as a hurley carrier, and to Kevin Griffin for his contribution in transporting the Limerick team over the years. Congratulations to all involved with the team this year.
