Blackrock Notes 2018

December 20th

On Sunday the 16th December history was made in Limerick when the Limerick Senior hurling team were presented with their All Ireland medals. Our own Richie McCarthy is now a proud owner of a Celtic Cross medal and we are delighted to congratulate Richie on this fabulous achievement. Proud night for Henry and Ann and all the family.

Presentations were also made to Jimmy Quilty Senior as a selector of the Limerick Senior hurlers, to Sean O'Donnell in Scoil Pol, statistician, to Jimmy Quilty junior as a hurley carrier, and to Kevin Griffin for his contribution in transporting the Limerick team over the years. There was no winner of the jackpot on Dec 13th, the numbers drawn were 11 13 17 27.  The winner of the €40 lucky dip was Ned and Nora Sheehy “Hill” Glenroe, Promotor Centra

On the 20th December the lotto draw will be in McCarthy’s Bar for a jackpot of €2,150 and we will have our Christmas draw for an extra 10 lucky dips of €20.

Blackrock GAA would like to thank all our promotors, and supporters of the lotto for your support during the year.  The lotto jackpot was won three times this year and many people have won our weekly lucky dips, and we would like to wish you continued success for the year ahead.

Congratulations to Maura Ryan who won €100 in the Limerick Development Draw. 

The long puck this year takes place on St Stephens day at 11am, from Murin’s Cross to Ardpatrick. All welcome, €40 per team of 4, under 16 competition, €20 for a team of 4. Minimum age is 10 years of age.

Congratulations to our u14 hurlers who were presented with their county medals on Saturday the 15th,  with Richie McCarthy presenting the delighted players with their medals.

Limerick senior hurlers started the 2019 season with a 3 point defeat to Tipperary in the Gaelic Grounds on Friday the 14th.  On Saturday Jimmy Quilty announced that he was stepping down as a selector of the Senior Limerick team.  We would like to congratulate Jimmy on his contribution to a very successful year with the All Ireland Champions.  Jimmy has been involved with the Limerick u21 or Senior team for the last 4 years and has 2 All Irelands to show for it.  The club are very proud of his achievements.  Well done and we are delighted to welcome Jimmy back to our Premier Intermediate team this year.

As 2018 draws to a close in the county of the current All Ireland Senior Hurling Champions we would like to wish all our players, managements, sponsors, supporters, and committee a peaceful and happy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

December 13th

The club lotto was won on the 5th December 2018 for the third time in as many months.  The winning numbers were 2 12 16 19.  The lucky winner was Ann O’Sullivan, Deebert House in Kilmallock.  And her son Sean was the lotto promotor.  Congratulations to Ann.

On the 12th December the lotto will be in McGraths bar for the jackpot of €2000. 

As we look forward to 2019 we have an offer of a weekly lotto ticket – for the 50 weeks of lotto for €100 including club membership or social membership which is membership of the walking track.

December 6th

Blackrock GAA AGM was held on Friday 30th November and Hugh Murphy was elected as Assistant Secretary and Peter O’Sullivan was elected as Assistant Treasurer, all other Officers re-elected.

Congratulations to Ardpatrick Development projects on a very successful Strictly come Dancing on Saturday 1st December, congratulations to former club officers Pat McGrath and Maura Quane on winning the overall competition, and to Liam Walsh and Ciara Moloney who won the best dance.

 November 22nd

Congratulations to Pa Kennedy who recently captained Thailand C team in the Asia GAA games, and also to his young neighbour Jamie Byrnes who was a mascot in the Ireland V Northern Ireland friendly soccer match.

Commerisations to Na Piarsaigh and Tournafulla who lost their Munster finals at the weekend, and well done to Aidan Fitzgerald who was the trainer with Tournafulla, doing so well to get to the Junior Munster final.

Well done to our near neighbours Charleville who won the Intermediate Munster final.

October 18th

Club lotto results 10th October.  The numbers drawn were 2 7 10 21.  There was no winner and the €40 lucky dip went to Josephine Roche, Lower Main Street, Kilfinane. Promotor Centra.

Lotto on 17th October will be in Healy’s Bar for a jackpot of €3,650.

Results

The Premier Intermediate team came away with a significant result on Saturday 13th with a 4 point win over Feohanagh in the relegation play off. The score of 15 points to 11 was the result of an excellent second half display and we again play Premier Intermediate next year. 

Congratulations to the under 14 team who won the county title on Saturday 13th beating South Liberties on a score line of 2 06 to 1 08.  There was great excitement after the win and congratulations to all involved.

The playing year comes to an end for the adult club and we would like to thank all our teams, managements, sponsors and supporters.  Hopefully we can build on the experiences of the year and the successes of the under age teams coming through.  Roll on 2019.

October 4th

The Blackrock Premier Intermediate team were unfortunate to lose to Garryspillane on Sun having been ahead at half time, losing on a score of 1 12 to 1 09.  Our last match is next Saturday at 4pm against Kildimo Pallaskenry in Ballyagran.

Congratulations to the u14 hurlers who are in the county final following an impressive semi final display against Croagh Kilfinny/Rathkeale on a score line of 3 05 to 1 04.  We play either South Liberties or Pallasgreen in the final, best of luck.

The GAA clubs of the country got a very generous gift this week from JP McManus and Blackrock GAA would like to thank JP for his very generous contribution to our ever stretched funds.  Thanks a mill.

September 27th

It was a disappointing Sunday of matches, the Premier Intermediates lost on a score line of 15 points to Mungret to 1 10 to Blackrock.  The Junior B’s bowed of championship action losing x 2 points to Feohanagh on a scoreline of 10 points to 8, and the under 16’s lost to Murroe x 3 points in the shield play off.

Next Sunday the Premier intermediates play Garryspillane in Kilmallock at 2pm.

September 20th

Blackrock Junior B hurlers are South Champions overcoming Garryspillane to win on Sun 16th on a score line of 18 points to 2 9.  It was a trilling affair with Blackrock winning throughout the match.  Captain Richie Murphy lifted the cup to the delight of the Blackrock supporters.  We are now through to the County phase of the competition.

The Premier Intermediate team drew with Pallasgreen on Friday night on a score line of 1 18 each. We play Garryspillane on Sun next 9th in Kilmallock at 2pm, followed by the Bruree match on Wed 12th in Kilbready at 7.30 pm.  Round 6 is on Sept 23rd in Bruff against Mungret at 2pm, and the final round is V Kildimo Pallaskennry the weekend of 7th Oct.

The Junior Camogie team of Blackrock Effin lost the county semi-final V Doon on Sun 2nd after extra time by one point.

Congratulations to Blackrock Bord na nOg on a hugely successful weekend of sport and fun and “Liam”. Big crowds attended the annual cup matches with Blackrock winning the Denny O Dea cup, Knockainy winning the Chris Carroll plaque, Granagh Ballingarry winning the Maurice Cahill cup, and Glenroe winning the Thomas Sheehy cup. Blackrock retained the Sheamus Ryan cup    The family fun day despite the rain was a great day,  topped off by the arrival of the Liam McCarthy cup with our local hero’s Richie McCarthy and Jimmy Quilty.

August 30th

The sports quiz has nearly reached its conclusion, only the football All Ireland remains and Ann Hosford remains in the lead on a score of 36, followed by Richie Murphy on 31, Gavin O’Mahony on 29, Christina Ensor on 28, Bernie Burke, Sarah Keating, George Hosford all on 27, Jim Griffin, Niamh O’Meara and Simon Hennessy on 26, the Goggin family, Margaret McGrath and Mary O’Shaughnessy are all on 25.  Well done to all who have scored highly.

The Premier Intermediate competition resumes this week and we play Pallasgreen in Bruff at 6.30 on Friday 31st August. Followed by Garryspillane on the 9th in Kilmallock at 2pm.

The junior B’s drew with Camogue Rovers on Saturday night 2 12 to 3 09, and we are now in the semi-final on 2nd September with the final fixed for the 9th.

Well done to Sean O’Neill  who was in the winning team with the U15 Limerick Development team who won the Shield in Tipperary at the weekend, Jimmy Quilty Jnr played with the U16’s in Mallow.

The under age skills day is on Saturday in the Sportsfield and the family fun day is Sunday. All welcome. 

Celebrations are still going well following our All Ireland win in the Senior hurling and we hope it will give us all a warm glow as the winter weather approaches.

August 23rd

Huge congratulations to superstars Richie McCarthy and Jimmy Quilty on the fabulous Senior Hurling All Ireland and their part in it.  Also Sean O’Donnell in Scoil Pol stats man in the backroom team and water boy Jimmy Quilty Junior. We are all delighted with the win and wish all our supporters safe and happy celebrations.  
Normal notes will resume next week when life will be back to normal.

August 16th

This week all roads lead to Croke Park and we are all very excited in Blackrock GAA and very proud of our Richie and Jimmy for the part they are playing in this journey and we wish them and John Kiely, Declan Hannon and all the team and management and everyone involved in this momentous occasion for Limerick GAA.  And we hope Kevin Griffin and Griffins Coaches will be transporting another cup ”the biggest of them all” out of Croke Park on Sunday evening, and we look forward to meeting “Liam”. 

Hopefully by the time you are reading this, the ticket situation will have eased and there will be enough for all who want to go, keep trying the relations and friends in other counties, tickets have a habit of showing up at the last minute so don’t give up hope.

August 9th

Blackrock GAA lotto was won last week – the Jackpot was €12,800 and the cheque was presented to Joe McCarthy by Fintan Leahy Chairman, John Walsh Treasurer and Brendan O’Brien the lucky seller.  Joe and family were delighted with the win and extended best wishes and thanks to the club.

The Jackpot is €2150 in Healy’s Bar

The country was lifted by our very first world cup final this week, the Irish ladies hockey team lost the final to the Netherlands, and came away with a silver medal.  Congrats to all involved.

All roads lead to Croke Park on the 19th August for the All Ireland Senior hurling final against Galway.  Tickets will be scarce, all paid up registered club members can request to be in the draw for tickets. The Premier intermediate championship will resume after the All Ireland.

August 2nd

As I have just arrived in from Croke Park I will start with the huge congratulations to the super Limerick team and management who delighted us all in the All Ireland Semi final V Cork on Sunday, winning by 4 points after extra time, 3 32 to 2 31.We wish Richie and Jimmy the best of luck as all roads lead to All Ireland sun in 3 weeks.  Ticket information for club members will follow in the next week.

The Premier Intermediate championship will understandably be deferred now until after the All Ireland.

Our club lotto was won this week by Joe McCarthy who was the only winner of the jackpot of €12,800, congratulations to Joe and his family.  The jackpot starts at €2000 next week.  The draw will be in McCarthys bar.

Congratulations to Maura Ryan who won €100 in the Club Limerick Draw.

Hard luck to the Limerick ladies footballers who lost on Sat to Derry on a score line of 0 8 to 0 7.  The next match in 2 weeks v Carlow is a must win match.

Hard luck also to Tom Coughlan who captained the Limerick Tag rugby team to the regional finals last weekend.  Great display, losing the final.

the Junior B’s had a win over Dromin Athlacca in the South Championship, on a scoreline of 0 26 to 2 09.  We play Knockainy on Sat 28th, venue to be decided.

The Premier Intermediates will resume championship in August with the next round via Pallasgreen, then Garryspillane, Bruree, Mungret and lastly Kildimo Pallaskenry.  Well done on the 3 point win over neighbours Glenroe in the Glenroe tournament on Sunday.

The Under 16’s had a narrow loss to Murroe Boher this week, their next match is in several weeks against Newcastle West.

July 19th

The Sports Events League continues, this week saw a few finals and the results table is looking somewhat differently than the previous posting.  Ann Hosford remains in top position with 33 points, but Richie Murphy has had two good results this week and is now in the number 2 position. with 28 points. The Junior B championship continues with a match V Dromin Athlacca on Tue 17th in Kilbready, the u16’s play Murroe Boher on Mon 16th and the Premier Intermediate matches are off while the Limerick senior team continue winning ways

Congrats to the Limerick Senior team and management on a fantastic victory over Kilkenny on Sunday in Thurles, we continue to be hugely proud of Jimmy and Richie for their part in the Limerick journey. 

The Limerick minor hurlers play Kilkenny next weekend on Saturday 21st Best of luck to Jimmy Quilty Jnr and all the team and management.

Hard luck to Katie Hennessy and the Limerick Senior Camogie team on the loss to Waterford on Saturday ending the championship hopes for this year.

The Junior B hurlers had a great win over Garryspillane in the South League semi final on Thursday night last winning on a scoreline of 3 15 to 1 18.  The South league final takes place on Tuesday 12th in Kilbready at 7.45 against Camogue Rovers.

There were good wins this week for the Premier Intermediates against Bruff in the all county league, Div 3, the score was 2 19 to 0 15, and also for the Junior B’s against Bruree on Friday night, on a scoreline of 3 19 to 2 12.  We now play Garryspillane in the Jnr B Semifinal, awaiting fixture.

The premier Intermediates play Garryspillane in the south championship on Thur 24th and we play Drom Broadford on Thur 31st May in Kilfinane at 7.30 in the all county league.

Congrats to the Senior and minor Limerick hurlers beating Tipperary in the first round of the new format of the championship and to the Limerick U21’s who also won recently. The Limerick U16 team also played and beat Tipp on Sun and Jimmy Quilty, Aidan Gilligan and Ciaran Considine were involved.  Next up for the minors and seniors is Cork in Parc Ui Chaoimh on Sat 2nd June.  Best wishes to Richie and Jimmy Quilty in the senior match and Jimmy Quilty Jnr with the minors.

Results; The Junior B team lost to a very strong Camogue Rovers team on Friday lost in the South League, on a score line of 5 13 to 0 16.  We have no fixtures currently.

The very successful Annual Golf Classic was held in glorious sunshine in Charleville Golf club over the weekend.  The winners were; Tadgh Tobin, Willie Hanley and John A Moran.  In 2nd place;  Richard McCarthy, David Reidy and Declan Hannon, 3rd place was; Seoirse Bulfin, John Bulfin and David Bulfin, 4th place; Barra O Dwyer, Paudie Leahy and Mike Pottor, 5th place; Tom Reardon, John Carey, and Brendan Hennessy, 6th place; Pa McGrath, Mark O’Donnell and Mark Heffernan.

The longest drive went to Paudie McNamara, Closest to the pin Shane Mullane.  Under 16 longest drive Niall Fitzgerald, and closest to the pin Liam Fitzgerald.

The Raffle draw; Marie Watson won a Samsung tablet, Mary Ensor won a Spa voucher, Patricia Cagney won a drinks hamper.

Sunday last saw the opening round of the Premier Intermediate Championship, we played Feohanagh and sadly lost by 3 points, 1 13 to 0 13.

The second round of the Premier Intermediate Championship takes place on Sunday next the 29th April in Kilbready against Bruff.  There will be a break in the Championship after this as the Limerick Senior team will be in action in the month of May

The Junior B hurlers begin their league campaign against Camogue Rovers in Meanus on Tue 1st May at 7.30.  We had a bye in round 1.

The Golf Classic takes place on 4th and 5th May, in the beautiful surroundings of Charleville Golf Club.  A team of 3 is €150 including dinner, and we are still taking bookings. A meeting was held in The Woodlands, Adare during the week by the Limerick GAA county board where the clubs were invited to attend and during a series of round table discussions subjects including player drop off, recruitment of club volunteers, finance and fundraising were discussed, the club were represented by Chairman Fintan Leahy, Club President Con Danaher and Carmel Murphy PRO.  There will be recommendations for the clubs later in the year based on the feedback on the night.

Congratulations to the Limerick Senior hurling team who beat Clare on Sunday last in the Munster hurling league final.

Richard Cooke is the new club secretary and we wish him all the best in this role, the top table consists of Chairman Fintan Leahy, Secretary Richard Cooke, Treasurer John Walsh and Vice Chairman Seoirse Bulfin.  The phone number for the club remains the same.

January 11th

Blackrock GAA would like to wish all our committee, players, management and supporters a happy and healthy new year. 

The lotto returns on Wed 10th Jan in O’Shaughnessy’s Bar.

A very successful long puck was held on 30th Dec from Murrins Cross to Ardpatrick. 17 teams took part.  It was won on a new record of 32 shots by James O’Doherty, Richard Murphy, Paudie Leahy, and Kevin Palmer.  Second place went to the Moloney’s, Dave, Brian, Niall and Kieran with 36 shots. Both teams very generously gave back their prize money to the club.  The under 14 competiton was won by Adam, Niall, Liam, Jack and Dylan on 38 shots.  The refreshments were provided by the Greenwood Inn and the club would like to thank everyone who supported the day.
